For Lutendo Tshikwatamba, dance is not simply performance, it is the art of turning the body into language. His movements carry emotion so vividly that audiences feel every breath, every leap, every pause. His style is rooted in contemporary dance, but enriched by hip hop, acrobatics, and ballet. Each routine is more than choreography, it is storytelling in motion. “Dance is not about steps or technique alone; it is about channelling raw emotion into movement, creating moments that linger long after the stage lights fade,” says Lutendo.
The journey began at just ten years old, when acrobatics sparked his passion for performance. Scholarships in Johannesburg gave him the chance to refine his skills, and international icons such as Paris Cavinagh, Sean Lew, and Kaylee Rice continue to inspire his creative vision. Lutendo’s artistry has already been showcased at major events, including the Jetour launch, and through choreography for cheerleading teams and cultural showcases like STEP IT UP and 1nsync.
Balancing academics with a demanding dance career has tested his resilience, yet it has also sharpened his discipline. He prepares mentally by imagining each performance as if it were his last, and physically by protecting his body through warmups and injury prevention. “Every time I step on stage, I dance as if it’s my final chance to share my story,” he says.
Recently, Lutendo’s dedication was recognized when he was crowned the winner of ShowUp, a competition that celebrates emerging talent. For him, the achievement is not just a title but a reminder that passion and hard work can open doors to new opportunities.
Looking ahead, Lutendo is focused on completing his studies while expanding his professional dance career. He is working toward producing his first concept video and growing his dance content, while remaining open to new choreography and performance opportunities. With his rare ability to move the body as a vessel of story and emotion, Lutendo Tshikwatamba is poised to become a leading figure in South Africa’s dance scene and beyond.
