Mzansi Ballet invites South African audiences to experience a rare moment in local dance history with Fusion of Favourites — a moving and majestic showcase of the company’s finest works, brought together in one production before they travel to represent the nation at the Mzanzi Ballet and Ticino Sound Festival in Lugano, Switzerland this July. The Director of Mzanzi ballet, Dirk Badenhorst, is also the founder and director of this festival.
Running from 19 to 27 June 2025 at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, Montecasino, this limited-run season features every piece the company will perform internationally — offering local audiences an exclusive preview of the full tour repertoire.
A cultural masterpiece, bound for Europe
Fusion of Favourites captures the heartbeat of Mzansi Ballet: deeply South African, rooted in classical excellence, and fearless in its creative evolution. This multifaceted production includes:
- Song of Khudugo/Exodus – a world premiere by iconic choreographer Vincent Mantsoe, exploring themes of migration, spirit, and identity
- The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe – a majestic celebration of African heritage through dance
- Swan Lake – performed with elegance and contemporary resonance
- Solace – a new neo-classical work choreographed by Angela Revie, set to Debussy’s haunting Clair de Lune
- Echoes of Reflection – a graceful and introspective ballet by Angela Revie, danced to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, 2nd movement
This season is not only a celebration of Mzansi Ballet’s evolution — it is also a cultural export, with these very works to be performed from 3 to 5 July 2025 in Lugano, Switzerland, as part of the renowned Ticino Sound Festival.
“Fusion of Favourites is our calling card to the world,” says Director Dirk Badenhorst.
“It’s our chance to showcase the stories, artists, and rhythm of South Africa on a global stage.”
Vincent Mantsoe: Spirituality in Motion
Among the programme’s highlights is the world premiere of Song of Khudugo/Exodus by internationally celebrated choreographer Vincent Sekwati Koko Mantsoe. Known for his signature “Afro-fusion” style, Mantsoe brings deep ancestral influence, ritual, and movement together in a piece that bridges tradition and innovation.
“It’s not a biblical exodus,” he explains, “but a journey of connection and courage. Our stories are layered with grace, pain, and purpose.”
Mantsoe’s legacy stretches far beyond the stage — his teachings are integrated into school syllabi, shaping a new generation of artists with a deeper appreciation for African expression.
Support the journey: Gala fundraiser – 18 June
On 18 June at 18:30, Mzansi Ballet hosts a special fundraising gala evening at the Pieter Toerien Theatre and Studio. The event aims to raise funds for the “Baby Swans” — a group of talented young dancers preparing to perform abroad.
Tickets are R1 000 per person and include a welcome drink and snacks. It’s a rare opportunity to contribute to the global journey of young South African dancers.
